The 1st Brigade was stationed at Schofield Barracks from 1971 until reassigned to Fort Lewis Washington in 1995. In response to the German counterattack in the Ardennes the 84th was shifted to Belgium to help stop the German advance. The 2nd Airborne Brigade deployed to Northern Ireland in January 1944 under the command of Brigadier General George Howell. The 1st SBCT earned participation credit for the Iraqi Surge and Iraqi Sovereignty campaigns and returned to Fort Wainwright in September 2009.
